It was Guess The Guest Star's Former Show Week.
In viewing order...
First off came Boston Legal
I've heard people say it was the best episode ever. Am I allowed to disagree?
Is it okay that I disagree?
Alan With Girlfriend? Lame. Alan's girlfriend? Even lamer.
But my biggest problem was that I don't like it when they make Jerry look ridiculous. Yes, I get that he is sort of ridiculous, and that's the whole point, but sometimes they just exploit the Asperger's for cheap laughs and I don't approve.
And the Guantanamo Bay trial? Meh. I had one of those "Only in America" moments. Then I felt very European. Then a little embarrassed, because that doesn't mean what it used to. Denny annoyed me SO MUCH during that trial. He seems pathetic sometimes. He used to be cool, but now not so much. It was funny that Skinner argued FOR the government, though. Giggles.
I miss Claire. Claire should come back.
Absolute favorite part: When Denny argued that Hillary is to blame for Georgie Boy being president. Heh.
Where are Brad and Denise?
Then came Gilmore Girls
Wow.
I did NOT see that one coming.
But me likes.
So the Luke/Lorelai thing is rolling along nicely, building up to declarations of never ending love in the series finale. I'm not too into it, but it's fine. Full circle and all that. It's good.
The Rory/Logan thing? Not rolling so nicely. Like whoa! I hate guys who say "I love you more than anything and I want to be with you forever, so let's get married," and then respond to "I'm not ready/don't want to get married," with "Okay. Bye. I never want to see you again."
So much for love and forever, huh?
I liked Logan better when he was a jerk, but there are limits, y'know. There's charming bad-boy and then there's insensitive asshole.
So now I'm trying to decide whether I believe Jess will come back to town or Rory will end up alone, all grown up and independent. I'd like it for Jess to show up, which would make sense if he did, because I always preferred him, but Rory single seems more like the way they're going to go. Freedom to do whatever she wants and all that.
Either way, I'm actually looking forward to the series finale. I'm not watching because I might as well see it through till the end anymore, I'm actually interested.
Then I watched Veronica Mars with some trepidation
Which was silly, because it was ALMOST PERFECT this week.
There were only two things wrong: How un-cute Paul Rudd managed to look (how is that even possible), and the very end with the yucky holding of hands.
But it started off GREAT. Veronica was suitably regretful about the kissing, and Wallace was suitably cool. And Piz took it well, which was a huge relief and more perfection. I can tolerate Piz when he isn't emo and mooning over Veronica. Then he's just a fly buzzing in the other end of the room and staying out of my face. Casual, joking Piz is alright, if we can't have it any other way. (I've found out why he annoys me extra special much: High School Musical. Tell me you don't see the resemblance. Eek.)
Having Ashley from Two Guys and a Girl in leopard print underwear on a hotel bed was a bit unreal, but I suppose having "Phoebe's boyfriend" ask her to leave was very appropriate. (Even if I will always see him as Cher's step brother/boyfriend/incestuous relationship.)
And Leo is back. I never liked him all that much, but now I see him as potential for getting rid of Piz and I'm totally in favor of them "seeing a lot of each other," or whatever he said.
Vinnie running for sheriff... Now, if he can have a snowball's chance at winning that election I don't think Keith should even run. It's just not dignified to be in a competition Vinnie has any chance at winning. Unless it's "Best Costume" on Halloween or something similar to that. A karaoke contest, maybe.
Also that would mean Keith was no longer sheriff but could go back to being cool detective daddy again. That might get Veronica some more interesting cases.
Yay!
And another episode of Bones, believe it or not
Hodgins rules. He's just beyond awesome. 'Nuff said.
The case was sad, and I totally had the Whodunit wrong. I thought it was Abby's boyfriend, not Abby herself. That just didn't really make sense to me. (But who played Abby? I KNOW I've seen her before, but I just can't place her.) Maybe because of the whole "locking yourself in the trunk of your car" discussion on WaT last week. I would have liked it better if the husband had done it, because he was a berk, but then again, the victim wasn't all that swell either, obviously. She certainly seemed to have sex with a lot of people.
Question: How can you tell from a half-eaten corpse/skeleton that a person wasn't raped? That always gets me.
The scene at the end with Bones cooking mac and cheese for Booth? Awww sweet. But it totally made me crave mac and cheese, which is sad, because I think it's gross.
Finally, Without a Trace
I say "finally" as if it were much anticipated, so that might be a little misleading.
But it WAS the season finale.
I thought about writing an open letter to TPTB thanking them for how boring the episode was, because it saves me from having to debate whether or not I should tune in next season, but too much work would have to go into that, so I'm not bothering.
Now, I'll admit, if there hadn't been the whole boring sub plot with Carlos' trial and that falling ridiculously, unrealistically apart, and Elena's angst and Danny's attempts at comfort, it might have been a decent episode. The "to be continued" ending with the second girl being grabbed might have made me care what happens next.
But no.
Because it wasn't "to be continued" in the way it was with X-Files where you could spend all summer angsting over whether or not Mulder had died (even if we all knew he hadn't dies, of course). It was just "to be continued" in the "We're just doing this to make you feel like you HAVE to tune in next season" way.
But I don't feel like I have to.
I was fascinated by Danny's Jack-bashing. Mostly because it was so random.
Let's break down the situation:
A while back, Elena's ex-husband abducted their daughter and Elena threatened some cop with a gun to make him give up information, and in the end Danny almost killed Carlos but Jack told him not to. Sofie was saved and Carlos was arrested.
And now it's time for the trial. Jack takes the stand, and the case magically falls apart because Elena breached protocol. The fact that Sofie was found WITH her father, who threatened to kill Elena when she went into the house, was suddenly irrelevant, and it became all about how Jack has a blatant disregard for the rules and isn't able to physically tie down his agents when their daughters go missing, which makes him unable to control their actions.
Obviously.
Now, I'm all about blaming Jack for global warming, but that's just silly.
And how much of a crappy lawyer is Bud, if he can't even object those accusations out of the way. He used to do much better on JAG. Maybe it was the uniform.
And then Elena and Danny have this lame hand-holding session/conversation about how Sofie has nightmares about what happened, and how is Elena supposed to explain to the kid that something SHE did will mean that he goes free? Danny is sympathetic but unable to help.
The solution?
Blame Jack.
I loved it when Jack actually TOLD him to quit if he hated his job so much. Security guard at the mall. Heh. You suck, Danny. I liked Jack better than you for once. Looooser.
In fact, Jack was sort of okay all the way through. With the MP when he found her, with Viv after the case, with Carlos when he showed up at the end.
But I predict it will all go horribly wrong.
Something will happen to Carlos and it will be all about whether Danny or Jack did it.
Booooring.
Oh, and Sam had a scene where Poppy's facial expressions actually sort of matched the situation. Half of them did, at least, which might be a personal best for the season. All relating the case to her own life and resenting the MP's mother for being like her own mother. Yeah, I got that from YOU Poppy. You go, girl. Far far away, preferably.
So half the episode was sort of good, but not really because it was ruined by the other half. Once again they were trying to do too much with not enough time to do it in.
If they had played it right, this could have been another case like Spaulding. It had all the ingredients to make a GREAT episode, but they just ruined it by trying to turn two dishes into one. Oh, and the guy they had set up as the perp (Who knew Max from Veronica Mars could make such a convincing pedophile? And what's with all the VM guest cast showing up on WaT, anyway?)
I also think maybe I'm being too kind to this episode because it's my last.
Like I'm desperate to end it on a positive note.
But the thing is, if it was that positive, it wouldn't be the end, because if it hadn't sucked I would be watching next season.
Now I'm just wondering how I'll ever know if next season DOESN'T suck. Who do I know, whose opinion I trust, that still watches the show? Um, nobody. Going on Destined is pointless, because way too many people there have actually liked THIS season for me to get any kind of accurate picture of how things look in September or October.
Oh, well. If you don't know about it, you aren't missing out, right?
PS. The closest thing to a Sam/Jack sex scene in this episode was Viv and Jack making plans to go out for a drink. Make sense of that however you will.
